Particle acceleration and transport in astrophysical sources

From observations in the radio band, X rays, and gamma rays we know that some astrophysical systems contain very efficient particle accelerators. Focussing on supernova remnants, I will review recent advances in our understanding of acceleration processes, including the role of stochastic acceleration and the generation of electromagnetic turbulence that is decisive for both particle acceleration and spatial transport of particles. Emphasis will be placed on the observational signatures of specific theoretical aspects of the problem.
