Maarten van de Meent joined the NBIA in 2022 as an assistant professor in the "Strong Gravity" group. After obtaining his PhD from Utrecht University under supervision of Gerard 't Hooft, Maarten held an NWO Rubicon Fellowship at the University of Southampton, and a Marie Skłodowska–Curie Fellowship at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics in Potsdam. He is interested in the relativistic 2-body problem describing the inspiral and merger of black hole binaries. In particular, he is an expert on the gravitational self-force formalism, which solves the 2-body problem as a perturbative expansion in the ratio of the masses. He leverages this knowledge to develop and improve waveform models for gravitational wave observations.
